Privacy & security

Is my financial data safe?

Yes. Zukunft is local-first and end-to-end encrypted — your data is sealed on your device under a key derived from your vault passphrase, and lives in a local-only database. The server only ever stores ciphertext, so Zukunft can't read your finances and neither can a breach. Optional remote backups stay encrypted under your key.

What happens if I forget my vault passphrase?

Zukunft cannot reset it — only you hold the key, which is exactly what makes the encryption zero-knowledge. Keep your passphrase somewhere safe, and consider registering a passkey on trusted devices so everyday unlocking doesn't depend on typing it.

Can Zukunft staff see my accounts or transactions?

No. Data is encrypted on your device before anything is stored or synced, and the key never leaves your devices. The server holds ciphertext only.

Banking & data

Do I have to connect my bank?

No. You can add accounts manually or import CSV, OFX/QFX, or PDF statements. Open Banking sync is an optional Pro feature that keeps history current automatically while you use the app (UK banks only for now) — projections, budgets and goals all work without it.

Which banks can I connect?

Open Banking sync covers UK banks, via TrueLayer. Outside the UK, use CSV or OFX/QFX imports — or PDF statement import, which parses transactions with AI assistance.

When does my bank data sync?

While you're using the app. Because your data is end-to-end encrypted with a key only you hold, the server can't sync on your behalf — syncing runs on your device. Use "Sync now" in Settings → Banking for an immediate sync, or turn on optional background sync to refresh automatically while the app is open and your vault is unlocked, at an interval you choose: every 15 minutes, 30 minutes (default), 1 hour, or 3 hours.

Will importing the same statement twice duplicate my transactions?

No — imports are deduplicated, so re-importing an overlapping statement won't double-count transactions.

Budgeting

What is envelope (zero-based) budgeting?

Instead of setting targets you hope to hit, you assign the cash you actually hold to categories — envelopes — until Ready to Assign reaches £0 and every pound has a job. Each category shows what you assigned, what actually left it (from your categorised transactions), and what's still available to spend. Leftover money rolls into next month's envelope.

What does "Ready to Assign" mean?

It's the cash in your current accounts that isn't already sitting in an envelope, measured from your real balances at the start of the period. Positive means money still needs a job; £0 means everything is assigned; negative means you've assigned more than you hold — usually after overspending — and should pull some assignments back.

What happens if I overspend a category?

The category's Available floors at £0 rather than going negative, and the row shows the overspent amount. Because that cash has genuinely left your accounts, the shortfall appears as a lower Ready to Assign. Cover it with Move money — shift the amount from another category's Available — or assign fresh cash to the category.

What's a sinking fund?

A budget group for large, irregular costs — car repairs, annual insurance, Christmas — whose Available balance builds up month after month toward the eventual bill. Zukunft treats that balance as committed rather than free surplus, and a balance-by-date target tells you exactly how much to put aside each month to be ready in time.

Planning & projections

How are projections calculated?

Month by month, on your device. Starting from your latest real balances, each month applies income (with growth and UK tax for gross amounts), budget spending, contributions, payments and interest — annual rates compounded monthly, matching how banks quote AER/APR — with surplus carrying forward. Because it runs locally, charts redraw instantly when you change an assumption.

What's the difference between a slider adjustment and a scenario?

A slider adjustment is a live what-if — drag it and the projection redraws, let go and you can reset. A scenario saves a named set of those adjustments so you can revisit it and overlay it against others on the Compare screen. Your underlying data never changes either way.

How far ahead can I project?

Up to 40 years. Use short horizons (12 months) for cash flow, medium (around 5 years) for goals like a deposit, and long horizons for pensions and retirement.

Plans & billing

Can I plan with my partner or household?

Yes. The Household plan lets up to five people share accounts and budgets and see combined net worth and projections, while anything you keep private stays visible only to you. Members inherit Pro features through the owner's subscription.

Is there really a free plan?

There is. Free includes unlimited accounts, projections, budgets and goals, with CSV/OFX import, stored in a local-only end-to-end encrypted database. Upgrade to Pro when you want bank sync, encrypted remote backups, rules, scenarios and Year in Review.

Getting started

Does Zukunft work offline?

Yes. It's a local-first progressive web app: install it to your home screen and it opens and works with no connection, because your data and the projection engine live on your device.

Does Zukunft work outside the UK?

You can use it anywhere — multi-currency display is built in (GBP, USD, EUR, AUD, CAD, JPY) with user-entered exchange rates. But the tax model (income tax and NI bands), inflation categories and Open Banking are UK-specific today, so gross-income tax handling and bank sync are most accurate for UK users. Multi-region support is a planned direction.

Why does BNPL get its own account type?

Because BNPL commitments taper: each plan has its own amount, installment count, rate and start date, and finished plans drop out of your monthly commitment automatically. Modelling plans individually keeps cash flow and projections accurate without manual upkeep.
